Lesson Plan (Elementary) A Work in Progress

National Standards:

Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS): 117.5 (3) - Historical/cultural heritage. The student demonstrates an understanding of art history and culture by analyzing artist styles, historical periods, and a variety of cultures. As records of human achievement Students develop global awareness and a respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures.

Objectives:
1. Create a book
2. Learn about book illustration

Introduction:
Vocabulary: Illustration, Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukkah 

Social/Historic Context for Lesson: Learning about each holiday and the history/religious context behind them

Historic Artists Used: Dr. Seuss
Contemporary Artists Used: unsure yet
Books: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, as well as other holiday books
Websites:

Materials Used: Paper, Colored pencils, stapler, pencils/pens, sharpies


Technology Used: Computer/Microsoft Word for type/possibly write

Timeline for Lesson: Week leading up to Christmas break, possibly longer



Activity/Procedure:
1. Have the children create their book. They can either staple some pieces of paper together in the middle or fold them over, or I can teach them a new way to bind the book.

2. Have them write part of the story at the bottom of each page.

3. Next, they will go in with pencil and draw the illustrations.

4. Finally, with their colored pencils, they will color their illustrations.

Assessments (objective or subjective):
1. To show the children how to make books

2. To have all the children learn about the different holidays

Future Considerations/Notes: make sure students learn about all holidays, not just Christmas
